Working remotely or at home has been a very trendy topic over the years. Many people found it fascinating that with technology we can now work from a beach, a campsite, a different country, and more. Yet, for other’s who thrive off having a place to go to and people to see, this can feel like foreign territory. Here are a few tips that may help increase your impact when working from home:

  • Set a schedule -Work from 9-5 and stick to it. Inform your roommates, siblings, children, or spouse of your daily schedule and continue to work diligently as if you were at your normal job. Keeping those around you aware of your schedule helps you stay focused and also establishes boundaries. After you decide what hours you will be working, fill in your daily tasks for a clear direction of what you need to get accomplished

  • Take breaks - Avoid rigidly sitting in front of your computer screen or phone. Prevent eye fatigue, exhaustion, or neck strain by setting a timer for 10-15 minutes to give yourself little breaks; tend to your plants, take your dog for a walk, watch something funny, or if you have a motorcycle go for a short spin. Take some time to move around and get your blood flowing. Actually take a lunch break, and enjoy your meal or mid-afternoon coffee.

  • Switch locations - It is wise to create a designated area where you will work. Use a desk, comfortable chair, and find a quiet room, then maybe switch it up when you're taking a conference call or attending a virtual meeting. Utilize other areas of your home; go on your porch or patio, or maybe throw a blanket down in your yard and set up shop for a little while!

  • When the day is done, the day is done - To stay enthusiastic and maximize your overall productivity, stick to the schedule you created to avoid burnout. When it is the end of your work day, close your computer, silence your phone and make time for yourself, friends, and family to have a successful work life balance. The next day, start fresh with your list of tasks you need to accomplish and make it happen.

  • Stay in touch - Sometimes socially it can be difficult to work from home, continue to communicate with coworkers and friends as you would as though you were in an office through your phone or email.
