Many of us set goals for advancing within a certain industry; maybe we even attend networking meetings held by communities around us. Yet often the most difficult aspect of doing this is knowing where to start. At Backwoods Promotions we believe that networking and affiliating ourselves within a community of our peers is one of the most important aspects of advancing our future. Here are some ways you can begin to dive into the conversation:

  1. Explain your relevant history- The first relevant piece of your identity in a new industry is your experience within it.  History paints your timeline and relevance to that industry, along with your perspective on brands you may encounter. This may seem daunting if you are new to your workplace however many seniors in your field will be happy to share their experience and their “come up” story as well. Explain your education experience, and positions you have held thereafter. If you are not yet completed with your training for a career path; describe the subjects that most intrigue you. The key is honesty and building trust with those you encounter along the way.

  1. Describe your current role - Where you are currently is a great barometer of where you plan to be. Even if you are still a student, or considering your next steps towards a career goal this is a result of hard work you have accomplished thus far. If you are an intern or new to a role, listen to those who have walked a similar path and ask them about experiences that accelerated them to the next level. Problem solving and adapting to those challenges is a useful skill to have universally. Ask people you meet what defined them in their role, challenges they have faced, and to describe achievements they have made thus far. You may find out that their workplace is very similar to yours

  1. Express your goals - Often the largest motivator with networking in a group of your associates is to broaden your horizon and learn more about the companies they work for. Once you have connected with someone through networking, work on listening to their objectives and how you can realistically apply them to yours. Goals for your career or education path can act as a catalyst to propel you into the next level. If you meet someone through a business associate listen to their successes, how they planned, and steps to achievement.
