First questions I’m sure you’re all wondering: What exactly is a brand ambassador? Well my resume says that I have a knowledge of (and appreciation for) marketing, a passion for building and growing relationships, and the ability to gather feedback and provide innovative insight along with some other things about my online presence, professionalism and leadership skills. In today’s social media driven world it’s easy to visualize what we do and what social media influencers do. I used to call myself a brand ambassador but with the rise of influencers I’ve realized we are so much more than that.

A brand ambassador is very important because we  are there for brand awareness but also to ensure that attendees have an amazing experience inside the footprint. If you’re not familiar with event work, the term “footprint” is one of those fancy words we use instead of booth. We use a lot of those so keep reading and I’ll break down what a day in our life is truly like.

Before an event begins Backwoods Promotions sends out event memos. This includes information about the client we are working for, confirmed dates and hours of work, location, on-site and off-site contacts, client company information, job duties, uniform, check in & check out instructions, as well as social media, confidentiality and professionalism policies. I don’t know why I didn’t just say this in the first place but it’s everything you need to know! For larger shows there is a google meet training call where the client goes through the training deck. “Deck” is another industry word we use for a PowerPoint presentation. So at this point you have everything you could possibly need, including how the client envisions people walking through the footprint.

On the first day we usually arrive an hour before the activation begins. Activation means an event. Do you see what I mean about classing it up with all this fancy event lingo? Anyways, we check in with a quick selfie and report to our tour manager who gives us our credentials and uniform.  Our responsibilities are pretty straight forward: greet event goers, generate leads by encouraging them to enter our giveaway contest, and make sure they get a free gift (depending on the client we are working for). Occasionally we will have games they can participate in to win a premium gift. Because who doesn’t love free stuff? I have realized that although these games are for the attendees they’re also for our enjoyment. Sometimes I think I have too much fun working these events, especially when I get to see the smiles on attendees faces when they are in our activation space. Checking out is just as simple, we send a quick message with approximately how many gifts were handed out, how many people participated in the activities, and if there were any factors like weather, timing, or other events that affected attendance. Now we just rinse and repeat. The rest of the days flow the same but we don’t have to arrive quite as early.

I’ve been fortunate enough to work and travel part time for over two years with Backwoods Promotions (BWP). I am always thankful for the opportunities I’ve been given (including being on the local radio!) but even more than that for the relationships I’ve cultivated. BWP promotes a community of “enthusiasts first” and is a WOMAN OWNED community I’m proud to be a part of. If you’re thinking that the event life is the life for you, take some words of wisdom from my good friend Nike and JUST DO IT!
